The Best Clubs and Bars in North Beach, San Francisco (2026)

Posted on

North Beach is where San Francisco nightlife was invented, more or less literally. A few blocks of Broadway and Columbus have produced Beat poetry, a live music scene that has run continuously since the 1930s, and — in 1964, at our address — the first topless club in America. Here is how to spend a night in it.

A little history, because it explains the neighborhood

In June 1964, Carol Doda performed topless at the Condor Club at 560 Broadway. It made national news, it was tested in court, and it changed the entertainment business permanently. Broadway became the strip it is today because of what happened on this block.

The Condor Club Business Location

You do not need to care about any of that to enjoy a night here. But it explains why five minutes of walking gets you from a Beat-era bookstore to a jazz room to a club — the neighborhood has been layering itself for sixty years without tearing anything down. Our own history page has the longer version.

Bars and rooms worth your time

Vesuvio Cafe — Jack Kerouac Alley

Price: $$    Hours: afternoon through late evening

Pouring since the 1940s, next door to City Lights. The most atmospheric first drink in the neighborhood, and a two-minute walk from Broadway.

City Lights Booksellers — Columbus at Broadway

Price: free to browse    Hours: typically until 10pm

Not a bar, but it is open late and it is the reason a lot of people know this neighborhood at all. Worth twenty minutes before the night proper.

Bimbo’s 365 Club — Columbus Avenue

Price: varies by show    Hours: show nights only

Open since 1931, still one of the best-looking rooms in the city. Check the calendar before you build a night around it — it is not open nightly.

The clubs on the strip

Four rooms sit within a few minutes of each other, and the useful thing to know is that California licensing does not allow a venue to serve alcohol and be fully nude. That single rule sorts them into two groups.

Condor Club — 560 Broadway

Hours: Sat–Wed 6pm–2am, Thu–Fri 5pm–2am

The original, and still on the same corner. Full bar, a bottle menu, and Thursday and Friday we open at 5pm — earlier than anywhere else on the strip, which makes us the natural first stop rather than the last. There is a free entry pass for birthdays on the site, and bachelor and bachelorette bookings run through us directly. Reserve here, and see what is on before you come.Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club — 1031 Kearny Street

The late one. Kitchen runs until 4:15am Friday and Saturday. Free entry before 8pm with a two-drink minimum, $15 from 8pm to 2am, $25 after 2am. Card transactions carry a 20% surcharge.

Vanity — 408 Broadway

Full dining room alongside the club, open until 3am Thursday through Saturday. Last call 1:30am.

Centerfolds (391 Broadway) and Garden of Eden (529 Broadway)

The two fully nude rooms, which by law means no alcohol at either. Both are daily 6pm–2am with a $10 door most nights and free entry windows early in the evening — 6–8pm nightly at Centerfolds, 6–8pm Wednesdays at Garden of Eden. Lower cost, different night.

How to actually plan the evening

  • Start at 5pm Thursday or Friday. We open earliest on those nights, and an early start on Broadway is a much better night than a late one.
  • Do the walking part first. City Lights and Vesuvio close earlier than the clubs do.
  • Decide bar-or-nude before you pick a room. It saves a conversation at the door.
  • Eat before midnight, unless you are ending up on Kearny Street, which is the only kitchen running past 2am.
  • Do not drive. Broadway parking on a weekend is a genuinely bad idea. See directions.
